Caravan checklist

Stepping Out

Secure your caravan before heading out for a few hours

21 checks in 4 sections, about 10 minutes. Free to read or print — or run it in the app, where it adapts to your exact caravan and the equipment you own.

Marked items cause damage, a fine, or an accident if skipped.

01 Weather & Awning

Read the forecast and secure anything the wind can catch

  • Check the wind and weather forecast for how long you'll be away

  • Wind in or take down the awning — never leave an awning out unattended Safety-critical

If any wind is forecast, take it down. Retract roll-out awnings in sustained winds of about 40–50 km/h (25–30 mph).

  • If you leave the awning up, fit storm straps and check every peg

  • Stow or secure loose outdoor items: chairs, table, BBQ, windbreak, mats, drying laundry

  • Retract the sun canopy or roll-out awning

02 Close Up

Shut everything against weather and prying eyes

  • Close and latch all windows Safety-critical

An open window is an easy entry point for thieves, even when left on the latch.

  • Close all rooflights and skylights against rain and wind Safety-critical

  • Lower blinds or curtains to keep valuables out of sight

03 Gas, Electrics & Fire

Remove fire and gas risks before leaving the van unattended

  • Turn off the gas at the cylinder, unless the fridge must run on gas Safety-critical

Fire services advise turning the gas off at the cylinder whenever the van is left unattended.

  • Switch off the hob, oven and any naked flames Safety-critical

  • Turn off space heaters and any appliance that shouldn't run unattended Safety-critical

  • Switch the fridge to 12V or mains so it runs without gas

  • Switch off non-essential chargers and electrical appliances

  • Check the smoke and CO alarms are working before you leave

04 Security

Lock up and deter opportunist thieves

  • Lock the habitation door Safety-critical

  • Lock the gas locker and all external storage lockers

  • Fit the hitch lock and/or wheel clamp

Combining a hitch lock with a wheel clamp deters opportunist thieves.

  • Take keys, phone, wallet and documents with you

  • Lock bikes, e-bikes and outdoor gear to a fixed point

  • Do a 30-second lock-up walkaround: doors, windows and lockers

  • Note your pitch number and location
